Infinite Power Solutions (IPS) announced today that it raised $34.7 million primarily towards building the world's first high-volume manufacturing facility for thin-film batteries. The D. E. Shaw group and Polaris Venture Partners led the investment. Infinite Power Solutions, Inc. develops, manufactures, and markets ultra-thin, flexible, rechargeable, solid-state, thin-film lithium micro-batteries. IPS batteries serve applications within the military, aerospace, smart card, active RFID, implantable medical device, embedded micro-controller and wireless sensor markets. With its solid-state electrolyte, the batteries are ideal for extreme temperature applications and can be embedded into multi-layer rigid or flexible printed circuit boards. A related article in the NY Times states that: Thin-film batteries have a solid lithium core rather than a liquid one, so they are less vulnerable to overheating and catching fire. They lose virtually no power over time, and the units can be recharged thousands of times before they need to be replaced. ... While the technology is still in its formative stages,...
