Ballard Power Systems announced today it has signed an agreement to sell 2,900 fuel cells for $22 million (U.S.) to General Hydrogen Corp., which is using the fuel cells (Mark 9 SSL units) to power a new generation of forklifts. Roughly one quarter of the fuel cells -- ranging from 4 to 20 kilowatts in size -- will be shipped in 2007 with the rest shipping in 2008. With this order, "Ballard has exceeded its publicly stated corporate goal of shipping or booking 300 Mark 9 SSL units in 2006," the company said. It also seems General Hydrogen is making greater headway than Cellex and Hydrogenics in the materials handling -- i.e. forklift -- market. The order suggests there's a real business case to replacing lead-acid batteries with fuel cells in forklifts.
